Northern Colorado Drops Series Finale to Omaha in High-Scoring Battle

Early Deficit Too Much to Overcome in 17-5 Defeat at Jackson Field
Both teams came out swinging, with Omaha striking first on a two-run homer from Mason Gaines in the opening frame. Northern Colorado answered quickly, as Jake Bullard launched a two-run shot of his own to tie it at 2-2 after one inning.
However, a disastrous third inning saw Omaha erupt for seven runs, fueled by a bases-clearing single from Jackson Trout and a two-run double from Gaines. The Mavericks continued to pile on, adding runs in the fourth, fifth, and ninth to pull away for good.
Northern Colorado kept fighting early, scratching across two more runs in the third via a bases-loaded walk and a hit-by-pitch, and another in the fourth on Bullard's sacrifice fly. But the Bears' offense went quiet down the stretch, unable to push any runners across the plate.
Jake Storey (2-3) took the loss for UNC, allowing eight runs (seven earned) over 2.2 innings. Maddox Meyer (2-1) picked up the win for Omaha despite a rocky start, giving up four runs in 2.2 innings of work.
Bullard paced the Bears' offense with a home run, a sac fly, and three RBIs, while Jake King added two hits and a run scored. Craig Kenny and Nick Barber each chipped in a double.
In total, Omaha racked up 18 hits and took advantage of two Northern Colorado errors, while the Bears were limited to nine hits and struggled to keep pace.
UP NEXT
The Bears will host Air Force on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for the final game of the four-game series that has stretched over the course of the season. The Bears will look to sweep the series, coming in with a 3-0 lead.
