Bears erase 3-0 deficit and win 4-3 on Carter Monda’s walk-off walk to open the series in Greeley
GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado walked it off in extra innings on a rainy Friday afternoon at Jackson Field, taking down Omaha, 4-3, in 11 innings to open the series in dramatic fashion. With the win, the Bears improved to 15-24 on the season, while Omaha dropped to 13-23.
Northern Colorado erased a three-run deficit in the sixth and completed the comeback five innings later, when Carter Monda drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the game-winning run. The walk-off plate appearance capped a patient 11th inning for the Bears, who loaded the bases on a single and two intentional walks before Monda's game-ending RBI.
Omaha struck early, grabbing a 1-0 lead on Henry Zipay's solo homer in the first. Tyler Bishop added on in the fifth, launching a two-run shot to left to make it 3-0 Mavericks.
But Northern Colorado responded quickly. In the bottom of the sixth, Jake King ripped an RBI double down the right-field line to get the Bears on the board. A wild pitch allowed another run to score, and Craig Kenny's sacrifice fly tied the game at three.
From there, both bullpens took over. Dylan Smith (2-5) earned the win for Northern Colorado, tossing four scoreless innings in relief with five strikeouts. Starter Murphy Gienger kept the Bears in the game early, fanning nine over six innings despite allowing three runs on eight hits. Hunter Gibson bridged the gap with a clean seventh.
Kai Wagner and Jake Bullard paced the Northern Colorado offense with three hits apiece, while King drove in one and scored another. Carter Monda's walk-off walk was his only RBI of the game, but none were bigger.
On the other side, Omaha racked up 11 hits but left 14 on base. Zipay and Bishop each homered, while Zipay finished 3-for-6 and Bishop 2-for-6 with a pair of RBIs.
Luke Gainer (5-3) took the loss for Omaha, allowing the unearned run in the 11th after issuing three walks in the frame.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. for the second game of the series.
