Bears Suffer DH Setback
Wright registered three hits in six at-bats, including two doubles, with two runs-batted in and a run scored.
UNC dropped both ends of the twin bill, falling in the opener 16-6, before suffering a 7-3 setback in the nightcap.
Brett Barber, Jake King and Craig Kenney notched a pair of knocks each. Kenney, Brandon Sanchez, Dalton Miller and Tony Castonguay each doubled. Ethan Mooser inked a single and a base-on-balls in two plate appearances.
Utah Valley scored at least one run in seven of the nine frames in the opener.
Wright cut the deficit to 3-1 with an RBI double in the second.
The Wolverines built an 11-1 advantage with four runs in the fourth and fifth frames. UNC closed the gap to 11-4, with three consecutive run-scoring knocks in the fifth. The teams traded two runs in the next frame and Utah Valley upped the advantage to 15-6, with a pair in the seventh.
In game two, the fourth frame derailed UNC. Utah Valley capitalized on three miscues by the Bears, sending 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven, with every run unearned.
King cracked the scoreboard in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, with Barber crossing the plate. Barber drove in Brandon Sanchez in the next frame and Monda scored on an error by the Wolverines, pulling UNC within four at 7-3.
UNC and Utah Valley resume the series Sunday at noon.
