Vahvaselka Leads UNC After One Round

Play Suspended in the Second Round Due to Darkness
MARICOPA, Ariz. — Antti Vahvaselka paced Northern Colorado at the Cowboy Classic – hosted by Wyoming – at the AK-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club (par 72/7,337 yards), after the first 18 holes.
Second-round play was suspended due to darkness, with several holes remaining per team. The final 18 holes are set to begin after the completion of round two, which resumes Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. MT.
Vahvaselka recorded a 1-under par and tied for 37th, after one circuit. He started on hole 13 and recorded two birdies through his first four holes. He dropped to even par with a bogey on 18. Vahvaselka, moved to 3-under par with red numbers on the third, fifth and sixth holes, before giving a stroke back on his final two holes.
UNC tallied a 10-over par (71-75-75-78) as a team, one stroke ahead of UT Arlington in 22nd and four behind Weber State in 20th.
Iowa State leads the 23-team field, with 271, while San Diego and Long Beach State tied for second at 275.
JaeSeung Na and Westin Pals fired matching 75s, tying for 89th place. Na sank two birdie putts, while Pals registered one.
Cooper Tate opened his day with a birdie on the 14th and netted his last on the eighth on his way to a 77.
Palmer Mutcheson inked two of his three birdies on his first two holes, before finishing at 78.
