PORTLAND, Ore. – Northern Colorado Volleyball (11-14, 8-4 Big Sky) came up short in a competitive four-set battle against Portland State (11-12, 7-5 Big Sky) on Thursday night on the road.
The opening set was tightly contested from the start, with both teams trading points and showcasing strong offensive execution. Despite several key kills and defensive stands from the Bears, the Vikings found late momentum to edge out the first frame, 26-24.
Northern Colorado responded with composure in the second set, attacking aggressively and exploiting gaps in Portland State's defense. The Bears also stepped up defensively, holding their ground in long rallies. Their focus and energy carried them to a 26-24 win, evening the match at one set apiece.
In the third, Portland State came out firing, establishing an early lead behind efficient hitting and strong serving. The Bears pushed back late in the set but couldn't overcome the deficit, falling 25-19.
The fourth set mirrored the early stages of the match, with both sides battling point-for-point. However, midway through, the Vikings strung together a key run to pull ahead for good. Despite a determined effort from Northern Colorado, Portland State held on to close out the match.
Senior Brynn Reines led the Bears' attack with 12 kills, while Junior Nerea Alvarez Jorge distributed the offense tallying 41 assists on the night.
