Cruzan Shatters Record as Bears Secure 19 Top-10 Finishes

UNC Indoor Track & Field shines with standout performances at Ted Nelson and UCCS Invites
GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado Indoor Track & Field team saw one broken record, one win, and four finishing in the top 10 Saturday at the Ted Nelson Invite in College Station, Texas. Coupled with their marks at the UCCS Invite in Colorado Springs, Colo. the Bears finished the weekend with 19 top-10 finishes and multiple season and lifetime bests.
TED NELSON INVITE
Freshman Zander Cruzan shattered the UNC 400-meter record of 46.73, which he set himself in Dec. 2024, with 46.68 in today's race. Cruzan finished first ahead of competitors from Texas A&M and Georgia. Teammate Donovan Castillo finished ninth with 47.76.
Junior Jerome Campbell missed the UNC 60-meter hurdle's record, set by himself, by .02 seconds, finishing the race in second with 7.60 behind a Houston competitor. Senior Regina Mpigachai ran the mile in an impressive 4:42.13, finishing second behind a runner from Texas A&M.
"I am extremely proud of our Bears' performances today. They showed what highly motivated athletes can achieve when they set their minds to it," said Director of Track and Field Wayne Angel. "Jerome, Zander, and Regina delivered standout results, each finishing in the top two of their respective events. Jerome and Zander continue to compete at a national level, as evidenced by their impressive times today. Overall, I'm very pleased with today's results and look forward to building on this positive momentum as we progress through the season."
UCCS INVITE
In the women's 200-meter dash, sophomore Marely Del Campo clocked a time of 26.49 to earn fourth place. Junior Kayla Christiansen also placed well, taking sixth with a time of 27.58.
On the men's side, freshman Kyran Jones showcased his speed, earning a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.42. Freshman Jaymison Whicmann followed closely in sixth, crossing the line in 23.50.
In field events, sophomore Augden Tacha tied for seventh in the women's high jump, clearing 5' 1". Senior Alexa Oatman finished eighth in the pole vault clearing 11' 8.5".
"The Bears had a strong showing at the UCCS Invite, with several personal and season bests across multiple events," said Assistant Track and Field Coach Stormie Sickler. "Some athletes even set personal bests in multiple events throughout the day.
The sprints crew really stepped up and showcased the hard work they've been putting in at practice. In the field events, we had several top-10 finishes that give us great momentum and valuable data to build on for next week.
The Bears showed up ready to compete, and we're thrilled to see progress across so many events as we hit the heart of the season."
