In a pregame Senior Day ceremony, Austin Bunn, Garrett Fisher, Jack Gee, Carson Gross, Craig Kenny, Jackson Meier, Jackson Romero, Caden Wagner and Griffin Webb – received recognition for their contributions to the program, the athletics department, the university and local community during their time in Greeley.
The Bears swept the weekend series, outscoring South Dakota State (17-25, 9-13 Summit League) by 11 runs in the three games. UNC (12-32-1, 11-12-1 Summit League) went 6-0 against the Jackrabbits this season and tallied 105 runs while allowing just 46.
Romero broke the ice with a two-run home run in the second inning, while Jake Storey sat the opposition down in order in each of the first three frames. He worked around bases loaded in the fourth.
In the home fifth, Gross reached on a hit-by-pitch and the Bears closed to within one when he scored on a little-league home run for Kai Wagner. Gross scampered home from second on a throwing error when Kai Wagner beat out an infield. The wild throw bounded far enough down the first-base line and Kai Wagner rounded the bases, cutting the deficit to 5-4.
A solo homer with two outs in the sixth nudged the Jackrabbits advantage back to two.
In the home half of the frame, Gross lined a two-RBI triple into the right-centerfield gap, knotting the game at 6-all. Caden Wagner singled through the box and Gross put the Bears in front for good. Fisher added an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
Kenny entered in the top of the seventh as a defensive replacement and joined the offensive onslaught with a single to center, plating Jake King. Sanchez and Caden Wagner registered back-to-back long balls on consecutive pitches, pushing the lead out to 13-6. Sanchez delivered the big blow, depositing a three-run blast over the left centerfield fence. After a pitching change, Caden Wagner drove the first pitch he saw over the 416-foot sign in dead center.
Gross completed the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth.
