FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Jerome Campbell finished fourth, with a Northern Colorado program record time of 13.36 in the 110-meter Hurdles at the NCAA West Regionals – at John McDonnell Field on the University of Arkansas campus Wednesday.
"I am so proud of Jerome and Jesse," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Wayne Angel said.
Campbell broke his previous best time of 13.58 by .22. and moved to Friday's quarterfinal round at 5:15 p.m. He set his previous best at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational March 23, which stood as the 82nd fastest time in the world this season, according to worldathletics.org, before the NCAA First Rounds. Campbell moved to 26th-fastest in the world and bested the entire field in the NCAA Eastern Regional by two one-hundredths of a second.
His teammate, Jesse Hayward, ran one of the best races of his five-year career at UNC, falling short of advancing to the quarterfinals by less than half a second. Hayward finished 36th in the West, with a time of 1:49.45, the 59th-fastest time of the 98 competitors in the two regions. The field of 48 was trimmed to 24 in each region Wednesday. He completed the race faster than 25 runners in the East.
"Jesse came a long way over his career and overcame many obstacles to reach the NCAA Regionals," Angel said. "He is the epitome of a student-athlete. I could not be prouder of him, not just today but over the last five years and I look forward to seeing the man he becomes."
