GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado defense, Team Blue defeated the Northern Colorado offense, Team White, 13-6, in the annual Spring Game, Saturday at Nottingham Field.
The contest featured a modified scoring system that awarded one point for both a touchdown – starting at the 50 – or reaching midfield on a drive that started at the 25. The defense earned a point for each takeaway or defensive stop.
Using the modified scoring system and capitalizing on cold wet conditions, especially early in the 90-minute running clock contest, the defense jumped out to a 10-1 advantage. The offense found its rhythm and notched scoring drives on five of the final eight drives.
Linebacker Keenan Gutherie, along with defensive linemen Dominic Butts and Jax Brown paced the defense with five tackles each. Noah Mangham chipped in with four tackles and earned a point for his team by blocking a field-goal attempt.
Kalen Smedley and Sione Tuha tallied three tackles and an interception each, with Tuha's ending a drive at the 2-yard line.
Hank Gibbs, Peter Costelli and Kaiden Box rotated offensive possessions at quarterback, with Gibbs starting the game for Team Blue.
Costelli, who entered the spring in a battle with Gibbs for the starting position, connected on 9 of 19 pass attempts, including three touchdowns. Gibbs tossed one TD and rushed for 14 yards, even with the whistle blowing the play dead when the QBs were touched by a defensive player.
Box, a freshman from Longmont who enrolled early and joined the team this spring, connected with sophomore wideout Brayden Munroe for the longest play of the day, a 50-yard touchdown pass.
Munroe led the squad with six catches for 97 yards, while Meis powered the ground game, churning out a team-high 57 yards on a game-high 13 carries.
