GREELEY, Colo. – Dylan Smith worked his second-longest outing of the season and Trevor Landen made his first-career start, but Northern Colorado suffered a setback in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against St. Thomas at Jackson Field.
Jake King, Austin Bunn, Brandon Sanchez and Carter Monda recorded two hits each for the Bears (0-18, 0-2 Summit) in the twin bill.
King, Bunn and Sanchez tallied a run each for UNC, while Murphy Gienger entered from the bullpen in each contest.
Smith fanned a season-high seven batters in 6.1 innings of work in the opener. He kept his team in the game, scattering 13 hits and one walk, while allowing just two runs.
The Tommies (7-10, 2-0 Summit) tallied single markers in the fifth and sixth, before adding on with a pair in the eighth.
UNC mustered its best rally in the eighth inning but left three on base. Following a pair of strikeouts to open the frame, Sam Pease worked a walk and moved up 90 feet on a single through the right side by King. Garret Fisher loaded the bags with a free pass but the scoring chance stalled on a groundout to the third baseman.
In the nightcap, King led off with a single and advanced to second on an infield knock by Bunn. Kai Wagner worked a four-pitch walk to fill the bases. The Bears posted a 2-0 advantage after one inning on back-to-back sacrifice flies from Caden Wagner and Carson Gross.
Landen worked in and out of trouble through 4.1 innings of work – the most in his rookie campaign. He surrendered two runs on eight hits and two walks while punching out two.
St. Thomas responded with solo tallies in the second, fourth and sixth, grabbing a 3-2 edge.
Monda evened the score at 3-3 with an RBI single in the home half of the six, plating Sanchez, who beat out an infield single and moved to third on a throwing error.
The Tommies grabbed the lead for good in the seventh in a marker and added insurance with another run in the ninth.
