RUSTON, La. – Kai Wagner and Garrett Fisher each homered for Northern Colorado but it was enough as the Bears fell in both games of the doubleheader against Louisiana Tech at J.C. Love Field Saturday.
In the opener, Dylan Smith tossed 6.2 scoreless innings and UNC carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth behind solo tallies in the third and fourth innings. He allowed one hit and two walks while fanning three.
Jackson Romero opened the third with an infield single and stole second. Jake King smashed a single through the right side of the Bulldogs infield and Romero crossed the plate and broke the scoreless tie.
Kai Wagner and Caden Wagner led off the fourth with back-to-back singles up the middle. Kai Wagner moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and doubled the Bears lead when Craig Kenny grounded out to the second baseman.
LA Tech evened the score with a pair of runs with two outs in the eighth. The Bulldogs placed runners on the corners with a one-out double, followed by a groundout and base-on-balls. They both came around to score on a double-down the right-field line. Kevin Sharp retired the first batter he faced out of the bullpen to close out the frame.
Neither side scored over their next three turns at the plate.
UNC stranded a runner at second in the top of the 12th. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out on a single sandwiched between a pair of free passes and scored the walk-off winner on a fielder's choice.
In the seven-inning nightcap, LA Tech jumped out with a pair of runs in the first. Each side tallied solo markers in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
A hit-by-pitch and two-run home run put the Bulldogs up just two batters into the bottom of the first.
Kai Wagner cut the gap in half with his first-career homer and the first of the season for UNC. A two-out single reestablished the two-run deficit for LA Tech in the bottom of the inning.
In the fifth, Garrett Fisher made the score 3-2 Bulldogs, when he blasted a home run - the fourth of his career – to left field. Despite three hits and a base-on-balls, UNC limited the damage to just one in the home half of the frame.
Carson Gross worked a leadoff walk and stole second. He scored on Zain Zinicola's first RBI of the season with a single back up the middle. A two-out double plated a run for LA Tech in its turn in the sixth.
Sam Pease went 1 for 2, registering his first-career hit, with a one-out single in the third.
Logan Moser made his Bear debut and Hunter Gibson recorded his collegiate debut.
