Wisne Leads Bears Past Pioneers

DENVER – Brock Wisne fueled Northern Colorado (8-5) to an 82-75 victory over Denver (6-9) at Hamilton Gym Saturday.
The junior forward from Thorton, Colorado, posted career highs with 22 points, 10 made free throws and 14 attempts from the line.
UNC overcame a 42-36 halftime deficit, outscoring the Pioneers 46-33 over the final 20 minutes. The Bears shot 54% for the game, while Denver hit 51% of its shots.
Langston Reynolds tallied 21 points, three rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Isaiah Hawthorne added 16 points and four rebounds.
The teams traded 10-point runs in the opening half. UNC turned a 21-15 deficit into a four-point advantage with 7:37 remaining. The Pioneers flipped a one-point Bears lead into a 40-31 margin with 75 ticks on the clock. Reynolds scored the last five points for the Bears, with a driving layup and a 3-pointer.
UNC utilized a 9-2 spurt to move in front three and a half minutes into the final frame. The teams traded the lead on the next two made buckets, with Wisne's turnaround jumper at 15:09 put the Bears in front. They never trailed the rest of the way. Denver evened the contest with 2:14 left. Hawthorne sandwiched a jumper in the paint and a triple around a free throw by the Pioneers. Zach Bloch added 1 of 2 at the line and Wisne converted both of his attempts for the final margin.
Both teams knocked down more than 60% from the floor in the opening half. UNC hit 13 of 27 in the second half and held the Pioneers to 10 of 25.
At the free-throw line, the Bears knocked down 23 of 29, the second game in a row with at least 20 made free throws. Denver converted 15 of 21 attempts.
