The Bears Battle the Buffaloes on Thursday Night in Boulder

GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado women's basketball team will head south Thursday, Nov. 7 for their first road trip of the season for a match up with the Buffaloes of the University of Colorado. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the CU Events Center in Boulder.

CU leads the all-time series 14-6. Kristen Mattio is 0-1 against the Buffaloes in her time at the helm of the Bears while JR Payne is 3-0 against UNC. Last season was the first time the two teams met in the Mattio era. The Buffs won 78-66 in Boulder, Colo.

Scouting Colorado
The Buffs finished the 2023-24 season 24-10 overall, and 11-7 in the Big 12. JR Payne is in her ninth season at the helm of the women's basketball program. She has a .581 winning percentage at CU and an impressive .680 winning percentage since the 2020-21 season alone.
In the 2023-24 season, the Buffs averaged 75.1 points per game on 45.7% shooting from the field while allowing 64.3 points per game to opponents. CU only returned one starter from last season, graduate guard Frida Formann. Formann averaged 12.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game and was the team's second-leading scorer.
The Buffs added 10 new names to their roster, ranking second in the nation for most newcomers behind Clemson and Kentucky's 11. Tabitha Betson was voted Preseason Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
The Mattio Era
Head Coach Kristen Mattio enters her 4th season at the helm of Bears Basketball. Under Mattio, the Bears are 44-50 since she took over the program in 2020. Mattio is just two wins away from her 200th career victory and would be the first coach in program history to reach the 200-win mark.
Last Time Out
The Bears went back and forth with the Bulldogs of Concordia University (Neb.) to start the season off with a win, 66-64, on Monday, Nov. 4. The Bears forced 21 turnovers, and London Gamble came off the bench to produce 18 points in her debut at UNC.
On This Day: Nov. 7
Thursday's game marks the second time the Bears have played on this date and the first since 2022. UNC is 1-0 all time on Nov. 7.

The Big Sky
The 2024-25 Big Sky Conference basketball schedule will feature 10 teams in a mirror schedule format. Each team will play each other twice: once at home, and once away.
The BSC Basketball Championships will feature all teams in the conference with seeding based on the 18 conference games. The championships will take place March 8-9-10-11-12, 2025, at the Idaho Central Arena in Boise, Idaho. The tournament winners will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship.
2023-24 Review
The Bears finished the season with a trip to the Women's National Invitational Tournament where they lost in the first round to the University of Texas at San Antonio. Delaynie Byrne dropped 14 points on 5-for-16 shooting from the floor and hauled seven rebounds. Aniah Hall paced the team in blocks with two and added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and four assists. They finished with a 15-16 overall record and 5th in the BSC.

The Bears will welcome Air Force to the Bank of Colorado Arena on Monday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. UNC will recognize veterans and active service members for Military Appreciation night.
