Northern Colorado Shows Grit in Hard-Fought Battle Against Colorado
11/7/2024 10:16:00 PM | Women's Basketball
BOULDER, Colo. – Northern Colorado guards Silvia Nativi and Neenah George combined for 21 points, but the Bears couldn't overcome Colorado's strong shooting, falling 81-66 on the road Thursday night at the CU Events Center.
Nativi, a junior transfer from Louisiana Tech, led Northern Colorado with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including two 3-pointers. She hit a clutch three in the first quarter to keep the Bears within reach and continued to find the net, finishing the first half perfect from the field. Freshman George came off the bench and added 8 points on 3-of-5 shooting, including a three-pointer and a layup that helped cut into an early Colorado lead.
The game began with a brief UNC lead when Ella Van Weelden hit a step-back three to go up 3-2. Colorado answered with a 10-0 run to take a 12-2 lead. George sparked the Bears' offense with a quick scoring spree, while Nativi ended the first quarter with a three, leaving UNC down 25-15.
In the second quarter, Nativi remained hot, sinking a three at just the 9:18 mark. London Gamble contributed from the free-throw line, going 4-for-4 and adding 12 points. Van Weelden drained another three-pointer to boost Northern Colorado's outside shooting to 50% for the half, with the Bears down 44-34 at halftime.
Northern Colorado's offense cooled in the third quarter, shooting just 22%, allowing Colorado to extend its lead. Despite late surges and consistent free-throw shooting in the fourth, the Bears couldn't close the gap, and Colorado secured the win.
Colorado was led by forward Jade Masogayo, who recorded 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, adding five assists and a block. Nyamer Diew also contributed with 14 points, hitting two 3-pointers and pulling down three rebounds. Junior guard Kindyll Wetta directed Colorado's offense with a team-high 10 assists, while Johanna Teder and Sara-Rose Smith combined for 19 points off the bench, helping the Buffs maintain their lead throughout.
