Women's Basketball Welcomes Concordia (Neb.) for Season Opener

GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado women's basketball team officially begins the 2024-25 season with a home match-up against the Bulldogs of Concordia University (Neb.). Tipoff will be at 5:30 p.m at the Bank of Colorado Arena.

This is the first time the Bears and Bulldogs will meet in program history.
Scouting Concordia (Neb.)
Concordia (Neb.) is a perennial NAIA contender. They have started the season off with one win and one loss at the Cattle Classic in Seward, Neb. over the weekend. In the Bulldogs first game, Abby Kriesser and Juliana Jones scored 10 and eight points, respectively, to lead CUNE past Oklahoma City, 78-64. The Bulldogs then went on to drop a game to Southern Oregon, 71-68. Kendal Brigham and Raelyn Kelty paced Concordia (Neb.) with 18 and 14 points.
The Bulldogs were selected fifth in the NAIA preseason national poll, and second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Last season, the Bulldogs finished 27-7 overall, second in the GPAC (17-5), and ended their season in the NAIA National Round of 16. Concordia (Neb.) returns two key starters, Abby Krieser and Kristin Vieselmeyer.
The Mattio Era
Head coach Kristen Mattio is in her fourth season leading the Northern Colorado women's basketball team, rapidly turning the Bears into a formidable Big Sky Conference contender. Since joining in 2021, Mattio has guided the program to unprecedented success, including upset victories and consistent improvement in conference play. Prior to Northern Colorado, Mattio led West Texas A&M to a 154-35 record, multiple Lone Star Conference titles, and five NCAA Tournament appearances, including three Elite Eight finishes, cementing her reputation for building winning programs.

The Bears closed out the 2023-24 season in the first round of the WNIT with a loss to the University of Texas at San Antonio, 80-62. Aniah Hall posted 12 points on 42% shooting to go along with 6 rebounds, while Tatum West had 7 points on 50% shooting and 9 rebounds.

The Big Sky
The 2024-25 Big Sky Conference basketball schedule will feature 10 teams in a mirror schedule format. Each team will play each other twice: once at home, and once away.
The BSC Basketball Championships will feature all teams in the conference with seeding based on the 18 conference games. The championships will take place March 8-9-10-11-12, 2025, at the Idaho Central Arena in Boise, Idaho. The tournament winners will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship.

The Bears finished the season with a trip to the Women's National Invitational Tournament where they lost in the first round to the University of Texas at San Antonio. Delaynie Byrne dropped 14 points on 5-for-16 shooting from the floor and hauled seven rebounds. Aniah Hall paced the team in blocks with two and added 12 points, 6 rebounds, and four assists. They finished with a 15-16 overall record and 5th in the BSC.
