GREELEY, Colo. – The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month refers to the end of the fighting on the Western Front of World War I in 1918.
"We are grateful to our veterans and service members for their sacrifices to this great nation and we are so fortunate for the freedoms they provide," UNC Athletics Director Darren Dunn said. "It is an honor to have veterans on our staff and especially proud of our student-athletes who have served."
President Woodrow Wilson announced the first Armistice Day one year later to honor those who sacrificed in service to the country and to observe the end of World War I. In 1954, Congress renamed the holiday Veterans Day in honor of all those who served in the armed forces.
UNC is proud to honor Wayne Angel, UNC Director of Track & Field and Cross Country, Darrell Bryant, Jr. and Eddie Sisneros for their service to the United States.
