Bears Fall at No. 24 Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Northern Colorado (7-2) dropped a dual for just the second time this season, falling at No. 24 Cal Poly 23-15, Friday at Mott Athletic Center.
The Bears built a 15-8 advantage with just four bouts left behind major decision victories from No. 2 Stevo Poulin, Armando Garcia and No. 3
Vincent Zerban. Derek Matthews added three points to the team total with a 4-0 decision at 165.
Poulin knocked off No. 29 Dom Mendez, with an 8-0 major decision. Starting period two on the bottom, Poulin broke the scoreless bout with an escape. He netted the lone takedown of the contest and collected a 4-point near fall, pushing the gap out to eight.
Garcia led 3-2, after two rounds. He secured a takedown in the first and gave up a point with an escape. Working from the top, his opponent closed the gap with another escape, the solo tally in the frame. Garcia chose bottom to begin the final period and returned to neutral to double up his foe. He pulled away with another takedown and a near fall, moving in front 11-2. He added the riding time bonus for the final tally.
Zerban led 3-0 after one period with a takedown and moved to 5-0 in the middle frame with a reversal, after starting on the bottom. He gave back two points, before closing out the bout with a takedown, followed by a four-point near fall. Zerban tacked on with the riding time bonus.
With no score through two rounds,
Matthews chose the bottom and escaped to move in front 1-0. He secured insurance with a takedown and collected the three team points with a 4-0 result.
