STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Senior pitcher Erin Caviness threw a one-hitter to help the Northern Colorado softball team pick up a 4-0 win over Texas A&M Commerce in the first game of the day on Friday at the Whataburger Invitational. In the nightcap, UNC played host Tarleton State and suffered a 2-0 loss to the Texans.

Peyton Gale got the Bears on the board in the third inning against the Lions, hitting a single with the bases loaded to score Alexsi Barashkoff and Alyssa Wenzel. In the fourth inning, the Bears added two more runs. Paola Villegas tripled to score Wenzel for her second run of the day, and Carson Fischer used a grounder to score Villegas on the next at bat.

Caviness picked up her second win of the season throwing the complete-game shutout. The lone hit she conceded came on the second batter she faced in the first inning.

In the nightcap against Tarleton State, both sides' defenses shined. UNC recorded five hits in the contest, but the Texans were the only ones to cross home, scoring two runs in the fourth.

Isabelle DiNapoli pitched six innings for the Bears, conceding two runs on nine hits, while striking out two batters.

"We played two strong opponents today and our team battled at the plate in both games. Our hits found holes in the game against A&M Commerce and they did not in game two. Lexsi had a great day at the plate and on the field. Erin threw a great shutout and Isabelle had a solid performance. Our defense was so clean against Tarleton State and that kept us in the game. It was a very solid day for us."

BY THE NUMBERS

Alexsi Barashkoff led the Bears with a .571 average on the day, recording four hits in seven at-bats.
Alyssa Wenzel was the only Bear to cross home more than once, and the senior outfielder also hit .400 on the day with two hits in five at-bats.
UNC only committed one error on the day, recording a .980 fielding percentage through both games.

The Bears return to the diamond tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. (MT) for a rematch against Texas A&M Commerce. UNC finishes the day against Creighton for a 1 p.m. contest.
