GREELEY, Colo. – The University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team opens the 2023-24 campaign and plays host to Hastings College on Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. from the Bank of Colorado Arena.
SERIES
This is the first time the Bears and Broncos will meet in program history.
SIMENTAL SUPERLATIVES
Senior Hannah Simental, who passed the 1000 career-point mark last season, has earned a sterling reputation across the league. The Pueblo, Colorado native was named the Big Sky Conference Preseason Team. Last season, Simental led the conference with a.912 free-throw percentage and shot 37.9 percent from three-point range, which was fourth in the conference.
BYRNE SHINES BRIGHT
Senior post player Delaynie Byrne is poised for a standout 2023-24 campaign.
Last season, the Arvada product finished the regular season averaging 14.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, both of which are team-highs. Byrne started and played in each game and scored 408 total points.
NEW FACES
For the 2023 recruiting class, UNC head coach Kristen Mattio's goal was to recruit size and speed, and that goal was clearly executed.
Mattio welcomes six newcomers to the roster: Tena Ikidi (6-3), Tiani Abrams (6-1), Tatum West (6-1), Ashley Panem (5-9), Michelle Duchemin (6-0), and Seneca Hackley (5-9).
The six newcomers, along with the eight returners, will provide the Bears with quality depth and the ability to adapt to differing styles of basketball during the non-conference and Big Sky Conference portions of their schedule.
2022-23 REVIEW
Last season, the Bears went 7-5 in non-conference play. The Bears earned an exciting 102-91 triple overtime win over Colorado State. The Bears also defeated Northern New Mexico, Incarnate Word, South Dakota, and Omaha.
The Bears went 7-7 at home, and 5-10 in true road games.
UNC defeated Weber State in the opening round of the Big Sky Tournament and dropped a 64-48 decision in the next round.
Simental and Byrne were both named the Big Sky All-Conference Team.
MATTIO ERA
This marks the third season under head coach Kristen Mattio, who is 28-34 leading the Bears.
Mattio came to UNC after a successful six-year stint at West Texas A&M and sported a 154-35 record.
