GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado's Voice (KFKA) is bringing back a familiar voice with Mike Rice taking over the mic for UNC men's basketball this season.
Rice was at KFKA full-time between 1991 and 2002 where he broadcasted high school games, covered daily news and sporting events, hosted a local talk show, and served as the programming director. Between 1995 and 2004, Rice called UNC basketball games before taking a full-time job with KOA in Denver. During his time with KOA, Rice was on the call for the Rockies, and University of Colorado women's basketball, studio host for the Broncos, and served as a sports/news anchor and sports director.
"What a thrill to call UNC basketball again," Rice said. "Thank you to KFKA owner Damon Sasso and General Manager Brady Hull for this opportunity to return to the station where I started in broadcasting."
Rice will renew his UNC hoops broadcasting career when the Bears begin their regular season on Monday, November 6th against Colorado College. He will also host the weekly basketball version of the UNC coaches show beginning on November 21st.
"I have so many great memories of calling Bears games over the years and I look forward to making new memories now," Rice said. "It will be great to follow this year's Bears under Coach Smiley and his staff."
Rice will replace Jerry Schemmel as Jerry continues to broadcast Rockies games and host his popular "Amazing Americans" talk show.
"We were so thankful to have Jerry Schemmel on the call these past few seasons and are excited to continue working with him in some capacity going forward, but with his current schedule, providing play-by-play for these broadcasts would prove to be difficult," KFKA General Manager Brady Hull said. "Having the opportunity to bring back such a talented broadcaster in Mike Rice is a dream come true and we couldn't be more excited."
You can follow Bears coverage on KFKA with their award-winning lineup, featuring Good Morning NOCO with Brian Gary and Tanner Schwindt, Coach Speak, and the Hull Show. KFKA will also provide weekly Bears coaches shows, coach and player interviews, and more. You can hear KFKA on 103.1, 1310, or learn more at 1310kfka.com.
