SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Despite dropping the first of three games against St. Thomas, 5-4, a resilient Northern Colorado baseball squad bounced back to even the series with a 7-4 victory. Now all eyes point to Sunday for the all-important rubber match.
GAME 1
Craig Kenny has earned his spot as the Bears' cleanup hitter over the last couple of weeks. UNC's catcher brought in the Summit's leader in batting average, Cameron Cromer, to lift his team into the early lead.
Sophomore starting pitcher Ian Torpey had posted back-to-back solid outings for the Blue and Gold and made quick work to make it three in a row on Saturday. The San Jose, California native breezed through the first two innings with three strikeouts, keeping the Bears in the lead.
Two runs from the Tommies in the third and fifth innings gave the home side the lead.
No panic from Torpey, though, as the right-hander plowed through the St. Thomas lineup, collecting eight strikeouts in his seven innings pitched.
Walks from Kenny and freshman Jake King kicked off the top of the eighth frame, bringing up Caden Wagner. The Colorado native produced a clutch two-run double to bring Northern Colorado within one of the Tommies.
With the bases loaded and only one out, Hayden Heinze applied the pressure forcing a fielder's choice, scoring Aaron Garcia and tying the ballgame at four.
St. Thomas conjured a home run in the bottom end of the eighth to retake the lead for the second time Saturday afternoon. And while UNC put a man in scoring position in the ninth, its late rally came up short, handing the Tommies the win, 5-4.
GAME 2
Fellow sophomore Ian Isdale got the nod to start game two of the day and through the first couple of innings looked to match the effort of Torpey. Isdale got some help from Craig Kenny in the first as the catcher caught his 11th man trying to steal this season.
In the second, Isdale retired the side in order to keep the Tommies blanked for another inning.
St. Thomas struck first blood in the third with three runs, forcing UNC to turn to Ashton Mansur for the majority of the afternoon.
However, before Mansur went out for his second inning of work, Josh Glenn put his team on the board with a two-run shot to left, his fifth home run of the season, pulling Northern Colorado within one.
The home side tacked on another run in the fourth but Mansur wouldn't make another mistake. The senior from Littleton, Colorado went 4.1 innings with a single earned run and two strikeouts.
With the Bears within earshot of UST, the Blue and Gold offense went to work in the top of the sixth.
Jake King kickstarted the inning with a single to centerfield and didn't have to wait long to prance home as Caden Wagner's third double of the day made it a one-run game, 4-3.
After Glenn climbed aboard with a walk and loaded the bases, in stepped Lincoln Turner with a golden opportunity. Turner caught everything and then some, vaulting Northern Colorado into the lead with a grand slam. Not a bad way to record your first career home run.
On came Jack Tuttle and Logan Chase.
Tuttle pitched a near-perfect eighth inning. Though the freshman gave up a single, UNC's Summit League-leading 28th double play of the season ended the frame to push the affair into the ninth.
Chase took the reins in the ninth and absorbed every blow St. Thomas threw at him. With the bases loaded, Chase silenced the Tommie faithful at Koch Diamond, issuing a gut-wrenching strikeout to seal Northern Colorado's victory, 7-4.
Game Notes
The Bears and Tommies will matchup once more on Sunday, April 24. First pitch is set for Noon MT.
