Bears nearly complete comeback against St. Thomas

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Northern Colorado fought valiantly to dig itself out of a four-run hole but some late-game drama handed St. Thomas its second win of the weekend, 8-6.
The man who hit yesterday's pivotal grand slam, Lincoln Turner, picked up right where he left off in the second inning, kickstarting the frame with a single up the middle.
After walks from Josh Glenn and Caden Wagner, the ever-observant Turner didn't hesitate to put the first run of the game on the board on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Hayden Heinze's fielder's choice scored Glenn, doubling UNC's advantage.
St. Thomas responded immediately with three runs in the bottom half to leapfrog into the lead.
Aside from the second frame, starting pitcher Dylan Day performed admirably. Pitching 4.2 innings while striking out two.
As both pitchers settled into a groove, Northern Colorado trailed by just a single run until the fifth inning. Capitalizing on four hits, the Tommies threw up three runs to widen its margin, 6-2.
There the game stood until Shaydon Kubo and the Bears stepped to the dish in the eighth inning. Kubo's double ignited a four-run frame that saw RBI from Kubo, Jake King and a clutch swing from Caden Wagner that tied up the contest at six.
Once more St. Thomas immediately responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, 8-6.
A lead-off triple from Hayden Heinze made things interesting in the ninth but the sophomore from Fort Collins would be stuck 90-feet from home as the Tommies picked up its second victory of the weekend.
Game Notes
Head coach Carl Iwasaki and the Bears will return home to Alumni Weekend and Senior Day (5/1) when UNC hosts Oral Roberts next weekend. The first of the three-game set begins on Friday, April 29 at 2 p.m. MT. Admission to Jackson Field is always free.
