Bears pitchers combine for program record as UNC blasts CCU, 18-7

A program-record 19 strikeouts amongst the Bears' six pitchers, combined with an offensive barrage at the plate produced a resounding 18-7 victory over Colorado Christian.
Freshman Kevin Sharp was the first of UNC's flamethrowers to take the hill. The young right-hander out of Lafayette, Colorado threw 3.0 full innings, grabbing a career-best four strikeouts, the first of many to come for the Blue and Gold.
Offensively, head coach Carl Iwasaki's crew went right down to business in the opening inning. Two-out walks from Jake King and Craig Kenny allowed Lincoln Turner and Chase Cromer to produce RBI singles. Turner would come around to score on a wild pitch as well to make it 3-0.
Two errors in the top of the second inning produced three unearned runs, tying the game momentarily. That would be as close as the Cougars could scratch against the Bears.
Again with two outs, Northern Colorado put on an offensive clinic in the bottom half of the second. UNC sent 16 batters to plate in the frame, posting 12 runs, the most since putting up a 13-spot against Regis in March of 2018.
Among the numerous highlights throughout the frame, and there were many, Shaydon Kubo homered twice to extend his team-leading total to seven, Craig Kenny smashed his fourth home run of the year and Lucas Allen bagged his first-career triple.
Suddenly, as the dust settled Northern Colorado owned a 15-3 lead. That wasn't about to deter Dan Martony's pitching staff, though.
After Sharp gave way to Sam Colehower in the fourth, the redshirt junior blanked CCU with two more strikeouts.
The fifth and sixth stanzas belonged to Ashton Mansur. While the Colorado native surrendered two runs, only one of them was earned and the senior mowed down six more Colorado Christian batters.
Meanwhile, Jake King was busy adding an insurance policy to the Bears' seemingly insurmountable lead. A solo shot to opposite left field in the fourth and an RBI double in the seventh gave the freshman his third three-hit game of the season.
As the game waned down towards its end, Hunter Miller added two more strikeouts lifting Northern Colorado's total to 14 before Jayden Metz stepped on the rubber.
Needing two to tie the single-game record that was set versus South Dakota in March of 2019, Metz was more than up to the task.
The senior transfer from Sienna fanned five more, including striking out the side in the ninth to seal not only the Bears' 18-7 win but also smash a school record in the process.
