GREELEY, Colo. – Hayden Heinze and Shaydon Kubo each kept their hot streaks going but Northern Colorado wasn't able to find a way past South Dakota State, falling 5-2.
Left-hander Iain Isdale got the nod to start game two and did not disappoint. Trusting his defense, Isdale cruised through the first couple of the frames.
Even when the Jackrabbits were threatened in the top of the first inning, the Bears' middle infield turned its 26th double play of the season, a stat UNC continues to lead the Summit League in.
Isdale worked through 5.0 scoreless innings before SDSU struck in the sixth. The Jacks pushed across four runs in the frame to take the lead, forcing the Blue and Gold to work from behind.
After South Dakota State posted another run in the top of the seventh inning, the Northern Colorado offense went to work in the bottom half of the inning.
Hayden Heinze kicked off the frame with his second hit of the day, making it 11 games with multiple hits for the sophomore this season. Right behind Heinze, Cameron Cromer doubled to right, immediately putting two runners in scoring position.
A wild pitch pushed across the first run for UNC and Shaydon Kubo's RBI single gave them its second of the day to pull within three, 5-2.
Jack Tuttle pitched brilliantly through the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, striking out a career-best five batters while keeping a clean slate.
Northern Colorado placed a couple of runners on base in the ninth but for the second straight day, wasn't able to produce a rally, falling 5-2.
