Leading Off
Northern Colorado's shutout of Omaha was its first since blanking Utah Valley last March. UNC is just one of 99 teams to record a shutout this season.
With a bevy of double plays across the weekend, the Bears extended its lead in the category in the Summit League. Turning two 25 times this season, Northern Colorado ranks 48th in the country.
After nine conference games under its belt, UNC ranks as the best hitting team in the conference with a .295 batting average. Cameron Cromer (.440), Shaydon Kubo (.371) and Jake King (.367) are all major reasons for the Bears' success ranking second, fifth and sixth, respectively.
In nine conference games, Ian Torpey sits sixth in the Summit League with 19 strikeouts.
Last Time Out
Ian Torpey pitched a gem in game one of the series against Omaha, picking up the win as he and Logan Chase combined for the first shutout for the Bears this season. While the Mavericks earned the series win, a number of Bears produced bright spots, including Cade Moeller and Craig Kenny. Each added to their reached base streak with Moeller leading the way, reaching first in five straight games.
Scouting the Jackrabbits
After starting the Summit League season off with three losses to Oral Roberts, head coach Rob Bishop's squad has turned it around, winning four of its last five league games.
Part of the Jackrabbits' turnaround has been its pitching staff. SDSU ranks second in the Summit and No. 64 in hits allowed per nine with 8.53. Junior Ryan Bourassa has been leading that charge. The West Fargo, North Dakota native owns the third-best ERA in the conference at 1.61 and is averaging just 3.86 hits per nine innings, No. 3 in the nation.
Offensively, South Dakota State aims for the long ball. While SDSU ranks fifth in the Summit in scoring, the Jackrabbits are second in home runs with 26.
History against South Dakota State
South Dakota State owns the all-time series with a record of 26-35. A sweep would bump UNC's mark in Greeley to over .500 after the Jackrabbits' four wins a year ago made it 23-21 in favor of SDSU.
Looking Ahead
Northern Colorado will host Colorado Christian on Tuesday, April 19 before heading to St. Thomas for another Summit League road matchup.
