SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. – Northern Colorado fought until the bitter end on Wednesday at Smith's Ballpark. UNC out-hit the Utes but a walk-off wild pitch gave the win to the home side, 8-7.
Determined to avenge yesterday's loss, the Bears came out firing in the top of the first inning.
Base knocks from Jake King, Shaydon Kubo and Cade Moeller loaded up the bases with just one out and Caden Wagner at the plate. The big sophomore out of Parker, Colorado got the job done, earning a walk and giving UNC the lead.
Northern Colorado wasn't done yet, though.
Chase Cromer brought in two more with his single through the left side and Lucas Allen's first hit of the season didn't go to waste, bringing in two more. All of the sudden, the Blue and Gold lead was five.
Utah wasn't about to call it a day yet. Three runs in the bottom end of the frame and two more in the second stanza turned it into a seven-inning affair.
Midway through the contest, Jacob Salim made his first appearance of the season. Pitching a solid 1.2 innings, Salim struck out two, gave up just two hits and refused to surrender a run.
Back and forth the Bears and Utes went, trading blows in the fourth inning with UNC scoring via a Jake King single to score Cromer.
Cromer was a thorn in Utah's side all afternoon long. The sophomore transfer finished 2-4 with two RBI, two runs scored, a stolen base and turned a double play.
Trailing by a run in the ninth, the Bears promptly loaded the bases, putting the pressure squarely on the Utes. Aiden Leahy's sacrifice fly tied up the game and had Northern Colorado thinking about extra innings heading to the bottom half.
A single, a walk and a pair of wild pitches had Utah thinking otherwise. The Utes only recorded one hit in the final frame but it was enough to get the winning run across and take the victory, 8-7.
