SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. – Northern Colorado struck first blood but three big innings for Utah gave the hosts the 18-2 victory on Tuesday evening at Smith's Ballpark.
The Bears seemed to have carried over its momentum to Utah, following its back-to-back walk-off victories over Western Illinois.
Starting pitcher Kevin Sharp worked himself into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the first but fought back brilliantly to blank the Utes with two straight strikeouts.
UNC's offense went to work a half-inning later.
After Garrett Fisher forced a double on an infield pop-up, Chase Cromer didn't waste any time giving Northern Colorado the lead with an RBI single to right field.
Cromer would secure the Blue and Gold's second RBI in the fourth inning via a sacrifice fly that brought home Cade Moeller.
Utah rebutted with some crooked numbers in the second, sixth and seventh innings. The Utes managed 14 runs in those three innings alone to take a commanding lead.
Both Jayden Metz and Ian Torpey turned in solid appearances. Neither pitcher surrendered a run in the 1.2 innings they pitched.
Ultimately, the deficit was too much to overcome, handing Utah the 18-2 victory.
Game Notes
The Bears will remain in Utah for one more game against the Utes before returning to Greeley for more Summit League action against North Dakota State. UNC's three-game series with the Bison begins on Friday, March 25 at 2 p.m. MT. Admission to Jackson Field is always free.
