Baseball opens Summit League play with Western Illinois

GREELEY, Colo. – Riding a two-game winning streak, Northern Colorado Baseball takes its first foray into Summit League action as the Bears host Western Illinois over the weekend.

Leading Off
UNC's middle infield continues to turn out double plays. With 13 already in 2022, Northern Colorado ranks No. 1 in the Summit League and No. 37 in all of Division I Baseball.
Freshman Jake King has been nothing short of spectacular during the non-conference season. King is third on the team in batting average at .269, has two doubles and is currently riding a team-best eight-game hit streak.
After not recording a triple in 13 games, UNC bagged four versus Mount Marty last weekend. The mark sits as the second-most in the conference and 70th-most in the nation.
Josh Glenn nearly won the Western Athletic Conference RBI title a year ago. Now in the Summit, the senior captain is off to a great start once again, owning 13 RBI on the season, 6th-most in the conference.

Northern Colorado split a four-game series with Mount Marty last weekend. Sophomore southpaw Iain Isdale pitched 3.2 perfect innings with a career-high seven strikeouts in UNC's first win over the Lancers on Sunday. Hayden Heinze went 5-8 at the dish with two runs scored and two RBI on Sunday alone, contributing heavily to both of the Bears' W's
Scouting the Leathernecks
It's a busy week for Western Illinois as the Leathernecks travel straight from Southern Illinois-Edwardsville to Greeley.
Head coach Andy Pascoe's squad posted a win in its first series against Western Kentucky but it hasn't been easy going since with the Leathernecks dropping 12 straight before picking up a win over SIUE.
Both Kory Olsen and Nick Mitchell are batting .357 in the early parts of the 2022 season. Olsen boasts a team-leading 20 hits with seven RBI thus far.
WIU's pitching rotation is led by Jack Carberry. In four starts, the senior holds a 6.16 ERA with 14 strikeouts and 17 walks.
History against Western Illinois
This weekend marks the first official matchup between the Bears and Leathernecks.
Looking Ahead
Following UNC's first foray into the Summit League, the Bears will head to Utah for a midweek trip to Salt Lake before hosting North Dakota State at Jackson in a week's time.
