Al-Khaliq wins Texas Tech Shootout, smashes UNC triple jump record in the process

Multiple Bears set personal bests at the Texas Tech Shootout
Lubbock, Texas – Northern Colorado track & field had several personal-best and many top finishes at the Texas Tech Shootout. Graduate transfer Qwazon Al-Khaliq led the way with the school record and first-place finish in the men's triple jump, Jumping a season-best mark of 16.03m (52' 7,35") by over two feet. Al-Khaliq's jump breaks the former UNC record of teammate Welre Olivier by more than a foot. Al-Khaliq now leads the Big Sky Conference, is No. 2 in the Mountain Region and 15th in the NCAA.
Distance runners Melodie Leroudier and Regina Mpigachai had strong performances as well. Leroudier placed second in the mile with a time of 5:04.38. Meanwhile, Mpigachai finished sixth overall in the 800m with a time of 2:12.47.
Sophomore Wendira Moss had a huge breakthrough in the 400m with a time of 56.95. Not to be outdone, graduate Andrea Stark hurdled to a new personal best of 8.75 in the 60m Hurdles.
"I was very pleased for the most part with our performances. As a team, we still must understand that excellence, not participation is the expectation. Many of our athletes were just going through the motions and not competing. I will make the necessary adjustments." stated Director of Track & Field Wayne Angel.
"Qwazon was on another level today; a two feet improvement is amazing. What was impressive was winning the event with only one jump. He was the class of the field. Kudos to Coach Loyd, he is doing an outstanding job with those jumpers." Angel added.
The Bears saw personal bests by many athletes at the Texas Tech Shootout. Jesse Hayward won his heat in the 800m with a time of 1:54.81. Gigi Douillard handily won her heat in the Women's 600yd dash in 1:31.48. Ruby Ann Gregory and Craiesha Johnson had personal best in the 200m with times of 25.73 and 25.85, respectively.
The Bear Triple Jump crew continues to shine with personal best from Tyler Thimsen and Maccee Reed. Thimsen had a personal best of 15.23 m (49' 11.75") and Reed had a personal best of 13.97m (45'10").
The day finished the women's 4x400 relay team turning in their best performance of the season. The Bears relay featured Wendira Moss, Regina Mpigachai, Ruby Ann Gregory and Craiesha Johnson with a time of 3:57.69.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado has one more meet to prepare for the Big Sky Championships at the end of the month with the Air Force Collegiate Open on Friday, February 18.
