Alirez takes over No. 1 rankings at 141

GREELEY, Colo.—Fresh off a win at the NWCA All-Star Classic, Northern Colorado's Andrew Alirez became the first Bear to earn a No. 1 individual ranking during its NCAA DI era.

Alirez earned the top spot at 141 pounds in the Win Magazine rankings this week after toppling former No. 1-ranked Cole Matthews in the all-star event in Austin Texas.

Facing the returning All-American from the University of Pittsburgh, Alirez scored a reversal in the second period and allowed just a pair of escapes to send the match into overtime. In the extra period, Alirez snared a takedown for the 4-2 final.

Placed at No. 5 a week ago, Alirez jumped four spots in the WIN Magazine's Nov. 28 rankings.

Alirez has compiled a 5-0 record so far this the season. The Bears will return to action on Dec. 4 at SIUE's Cougar Clash. The Bears will make their home debut on Dec. 18 with the UNC Duals inside the Bank of Colorado Arena.
