Mpigachai Leads Bears With 3000m Win at Corky Classic

UNC track & field continues strong start to early indoor season
LUBBOCK, Texas & BOULDER, Colo. – Freshman Regina Mpigachai won the 3000 meters in dominate fashion lapping the entire field to help lead the UNC Bears at the Corky Classic. Mpigachai finished the 3000m race with an altitude converted time of 9:47.87, a new Northern Colorado record and a personal best breaking the 34-year-old record of Georgia Sanz-Daniels set in 1988.
"We were able to accomplish a lot of things last week at Texas Tech and Colorado. It's early enough in the season to make the necessary adjustments in our training to get everyone ready," said Director of Track and Field Wayne Angel. "We've been focusing on the fundamentals of excellence, doing the little things that will make a difference for us as we prepare for post-season competition".
"Regina ran an outstanding 3k. She completely dominated the field. She now has won two titles and established two school records as well. She has set the bar really high, and it is going to be a treat to see her progression throughout the year."
The Bears had noteworthy performances both at Texas Tech and Colorado. Jesse Hayward finished fourth place with a time of 1:53.71 in the 800m, Steven Cross continues to show consistency in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.59 just missing the semi-finals. Welre Olivier was second in the B section of the long jump with a performance of 23' 2.75" which ranks him second in the Big Sky.
Tyler Thimsem finished fourth overall with a triple jump of 49'2.25 which ranks him third in the Big Sky. Maccee Reed struck gold at the Potts Invitational with a triple jump of 44' 5.5" that ranks him 10th in the Big Sky.
At Boulder, Melodie Leroudier won her section of the 3000 meters with a personal best time of 10:05.12 which ranks her fifth on the Big Sky list. British freshman Chole Rylance continues to improve in her specialty with a time of 5:03.03 in the mile. She is currently ranked sixth in the mile on the Big Sky list.
What's Ahead
Northern Colorado heads to Nebraska this weekend looking to continue the strong early performances. The Bears will compete at the Mark Colligan Invite.
