Bears fall to Mavericks in overtime

OMAHA, Neb. – Facing old North Central Conference foe Omaha, Northern Colorado couldn't find a way past the Mavericks on Sunday evening, dropping its first overtime game of the season, 0-1.
Fresh off a victory over its in-state rival Nebraska, Omaha came out hungry for more in the opening moments of the game.
Maintaining most of the pressure the first quarter of an hour, the Mavericks asked a couple of questions of Maddie Duren, Lucy Roberts, Lucy Hart and Kalen Niedling in front of Morgan Bury. Much to the delight of the UNC faithful, the defense was up to the task.
A number of cleared headers and four saves from Bury made certain the Mavericks weren't going to score early.
Once the Bears weathered the initial storm, the offense turned its attention toward goal. Haley O'Nan and Kalen Niedling each earned shots on goal, while Melina Faris and Lexi Pulley found space down the channels.
At the end of the first 45, however, neither side could find a breakthrough.
Most of the second half was played throughout the midfield. Cara Quinn, Olivia Seddon and Haley O'nan did the heavy lifting, keeping Omaha from creating any clear-cut opportunities.
Bury needed to make just a single save in the second 45 as the match ticked over into overtime for the third time this season for Northern Colorado.
Seconds into the extra period, the Mavericks secured a free kick in the Bears' half of the field. Though the initial header wasn't on frame, Omaha pounced on the loose ball, scoring the golden goal to end the contest.
What They Said
Head Coach, Tim Barrera
"That was a tough match today. I thought we played very well and controlled the game like we wanted to. In the end, we didn't create enough chances. Often these types of games are decided by set-pieces and that's what happened tonight. We'll regroup and get ready for Thursday."
