Volleyball stays perfect, beating Northeastern in five
9/4/2021 6:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
DENVER, Colo. – The perfect start to Northern Colorado's season continues.
For the third time this season, the Bears went the full five sets and for the third time, UNC came away victorious, 3-2 (25-17, 16-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-13).
Following a highly efficient .579 hitting performance against Mercer a day ago, Kailey Jo Ince continued her stellar play into the weekend.
With five kills and an ace, Ince along with the solid bocking efforts of Lauren Strain propelled the Bears to an opening set win, 25-17.
Ince ended with a season-high 25 kills with a .311 attack percentage.
UNC couldn't find the same rhythm in the second set, however.
Six errors from Northern Colorado, combined with .250 hitting, three aces and two blocks from the Huskies all added up to one set apiece after two.
Northeastern only hit .184 in the third frame but 10 hitting errors prevented the Bears from mounting a comeback.
Things started to turn around in the fourth set.
UNC's defense held the Huskies to just .156 hitting and on the offensive end, the Bears' attackers started to find the same magic it had in the opening set.
Northern Colorado hit .295 with an ace and a block. Ince, Strain and Harris all reached the double-figure kill total in the fourth, forcing Northeastern to a fifth and final set.
The fifth set belonged to Ince, Strain and the Bears. Ince slammed home six kills and Strain added two kills and a block to make sure UNC wasn't going to go home with a loss.
Though Huskies made the final moments a little nerve racking with a small run, Northern Colorado shut the door to win its fifth straight match to open the season.
