Football Opens Conference Play Against Northern Arizona

The Game
It's a new season, conference season. Northern Colorado opens the 2021 Big Sky Conference season up at home when Northern Arizona comes to town. The Bears looks to rebound from a tough overtime loss against Lamar while NAU is coming off a 21-19 upset of Arizona. UNC and NAU have split the past six meetings with the home team winning each time.Â

Numbers to Know
57 -Â Ben Raybon set a program record making a 57-yard field goal against Lamar.
3.67 -Â UNC's 3.67 sacks per game ranks seventh overall in the FCS
3 -Â UNCÂ has won the last three times the Bears and Lumberjacks have met at Nottingham Field.
16.2 -Â Uryan Hudson leads the Big Sky and ranks fifth in the FCS with his 16.2 yards per punt return.
Scouting the Lumberjacks
• Northern Arizona is coming off a big 21-19 win over Arizona last week.
• NAU's Harrison Beemiller and DJ Arnson were named the Big Sky's Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week.
• Beemiller had 10 tackles, 4.5 for a loss against Arizona. He leads the team with 5.5 TFLs this season.
• Arnson averaged 51.6 yards punting on nine attempts with six going over 50 yards and pinning the Wildcats inside the 20 three times. He is averaging 46.9 yards per punt in 2021.
• Redshirt freshman Jeff Widener comes in as the NAU quarterback getting pushed into action during the first game of the year after starter Keondre Wudtee left with an injury and has not returned to action since.
Around the Big Sky
Conference play starts this week in the Big Sky and it looks to be another great race. Entering this weekend the conference has five teams ranked in the top 25.
This weekend's match-up to watch is between No. 10/12 UC Davis and No. 15/14 Weber State in Ogden.Â
What's Ahead
UNC returns to the road when they take on Montana State on October 2. The Bears return to Nottingham Field on October 9 for homecoming when Eastern Washington visits.
