UNC men's golf picked up its second top 10 team finish of the year
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Consitant. That's what Jack Castiglia was at the Ram Masters Invitational on Monday and Tuesday to win the individual championship. Castiglia entered the final round with a four-stroke lead and won the tournament by that margin shooting a 6-over 216 going 73, 71, 72 over the 54-holes. The win is the second of his career.
UNC finished ninth in the team scoring, for their second straight top 10 team finish. The Bears shot an 87-over 927 over the two days.
The wind played a huge factor in the high scores for all teams at the tournament blowing at a consistent 15-20 MPH during the first and second round on Monday.
Castiglia was calm, cool and collected all three rounds sitting in second place after the morning round on Monday three strokes off the lead. He fired a 71 in the afternoon to enter Tuesday with a four-shot cushion. He extended his lead to as much eight on the front nine with three birdies over the first six holes.
As he looked to made the turn, Castiglia hit a rough patch allowing Pacific's Leonardo Rigamonti to get within two strokes with five holes to go. On the par 3, 183 yard 14th hole he drained a 10-foot birdie putt while Rigamonti bogeyed the hole for a two-stroke swing. He followed it up with a chip-in eagle on 15 to close the door on any contenders catching him.
Marcus Tait and Dino Degotardi finished in the top 50. Tait in 31st and Degotardi tied for 42nd.
What's Ahead
UNC competes in another in-state tournament next week at the Mark Simpson Invite hosted by the University of Colorado on September 27 and 28.
