Scouting the Cougars
The Cougars are off and running in 2021. With a 5-1-1 record, WSU has already posted impressive wins against San Diego State, Kansas and Denver. Washington State also took down fellow Big Sky member Eastern Washington, 4-0, earlier this year in Pullman.
Five fifth-year seniors highlight a deep roster for seventh-year head coach Todd Schulenberger. The Cougs were picked to finish fifth in the Pac-12 Preseason Poll. Washington State prides itself on getting to the endline. At 8.71 corner kicks per contest, WSU is first in the conference and No. 6 in the nation in the category.
Among those returning to Pullman include Elyse Bennett, who notched six goals in a shortened Spring season. Shulenberger also added a bit of depth via three big transfers in the offseason, including Oregon State transfer Sydney Studer. Studer earned All Pac-12 and All-Region honors during a breakout season in Corvallis.
History against Washington State
Northern Colorado and Washington State have only gone toe-to-toe once, matching up in Los Angeles on September 14, 2004. The Cougs walked away with the slim victory that day, 3-2.
UNC is 2-21-0 against the Pac-12, with its last win coming in 2008 against Oregon State.
Last Time Out
Head coach Tim Barrera's squad went north and came home with the Front Range Derby trophy for the first time since 2018. The 3-1 win, with goals from Lexi Pulley, Melina Faris and Lauren Woodhull, was the Bears' first in Laramie since 2013.
On this Day
Northern Colorado is 5-2-1 on September 19, including a near-perfect 3-0-1 mark in Jackson Stadium. The Bears' first win on the date came in 1987 when UNC steamrolled UC Davis, 3-0.
