Volleyball looks to Defend The Den as rival Colorado State rolls into town

GREELEY, Colo. – After a thrilling five-set victory over Northwestern to start the season, Northern Colorado faces another high-profile matchup as in-state rival Colorado State rolls into Greeley.

Quick Sets
Northern Colorado kicked off its 2021 campaign with a historic win over Northwestern in front of a packed Bank of Colorado Arena. For the sixth time in program history, the Bears knocked off a Power Five program.
Junior outside hitter Rachel Hickman led the way with 19 kills, hitting .421 and added three block assists and an ace. On the other side, Kailey Jo Ince posted her first double-double of the season, finishing with 14 kills and 10 digs.
Middle blocker Cece Huhn's solid play at the net was another integral part of the win. The Cascade, Wisconsin native slammed home 11 kills on 20 attempts and delivered a team-high five block assists, including the decisive blow that won the match.
Senior setter and 2019 Big Sky MVP Daisy Schultz showcased why she's considered one of the top players in the conference. She helped four players reach double-figure kill totals and racked up 14 digs to secure her double-double.
After posting 17 digs in UNC's exhibition against Wyoming, Makenzie Harris backed up the performance, grabbing 10 kills and seven digs versus the Wildcats.
Kyndall Feather picked up where she left off at the service line. The two-time Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week led the Bears with two aces with Ince, Hickman, Michaela Boon and Syd Cole each securing one as well.
Last time out
In a thrilling opener to the 2021 season, UNC bested the Big Ten's Northwestern in five sets, 3-2 (19-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19, 18-18), marking the sixth time UNC has struck down a Power Five opponent.
Scouting Colorado State
Colorado State also took a swing at the Wildcats over the weekend. Saturday proved to be more profitable for Northwester, however, as Colorado dropped the match 3-1. Sophomore Kennedy Stanford led the Rams with 12 kills while senior defensive specialist Alexa Roumeliotis collected a team-high 19 digs.
Head coach Tom Hilbert returns for his 25th season at the helm in Fort Collins. While Hilbert does have a stable of veterans, he also welcomes in eight newcomers to the roster in 2021.
History against the Rams
All-time, the Bears are 6-23 against its neighbors to the north. The last time UNC bested CSU came in 1982 in a match at the Bank of Colorado Arena.
On the Date
Northern Colorado is 10-5, including a 6-1 home mark playing on August 31. Back in 2019, the Bears knocked off another Mountain West opponent in New Mexico, 3-2.
Looking Ahead
Head coach Lyndsey Oates and crew head south to Denver for a three-day tournament beginning on Thursday, September 2. The Bears will match up against the Pios, Mercer and Northeastern.
