UNC men's basketball released its 2021-22 non-conference schedule on Tuesday
GREELEY, Colo. – Head Coach Steve Smiley and the 2021-22 Northern Colorado Men's Basketball team will face a challenging non-conference schedule released by the team on Tuesday. The Bears are poised to make a run at the Big Sky title with all five starters returning and take on some of the top teams to prepare them to do so with three power five schools and two Mountain West teams.
"We're excited about an extremely challenging non-conference schedule that will feature multiple teams that will have a great chance to be at the top of their leagues and potential NCAA March Madness teams. While I do wish we had a few more home games in the non-conference, the reality is that home games are really hard to get at our level and knowing that our first two Big Sky games will be home games in early December really helps to balance out our overall pre-Christmas schedule," Smiley said.
Having just returned from a trip to Puerto Rico earlier this month, Northern Colorado will enjoy the sun and sand to open the season at the Rainbow Classic hosted by Hawaii November 10-13. The full schedule for the tournament is still to be determined.
The team's first game of the season on the continental US will take place inside Bank of Colorado Arena on November 15 when Colorado College comes to town.
UNC spends the rest of the month on the road against some stiff competition. The long time on the road starts with a trip to preseason top 15 ranked Texas as a part of the Abe Lemons Classic. To round out the tournament, Northern Colorado will play a pair against San Jose State and California Baptist.
The Bears return to Colorado to end the month with a trip up to Fort Collins to take on Colorado State.
"Having a chance to open the season in Hawaii and get three good games in four days was a no-brainer and after that, the schedule keeps moving quickly until we get to our short Christmas break," Smiley added. "Our goal is to be as battle-tested as possible when we get into Big Sky play, and there is no doubt that we've accomplished that goal with this schedule."
Old NCC foe South Dakota comes to town on December 7 before the Bears hit the road again. UNC takes on a pair of PAC 12 schools in Arizona and Washington State before closing out the non-conference season just before Christmas when Northern New Mexico visits Greeley on December 21.
Northern Colorado's 2021-22 schedule is now complete after the Big Sky released the Big Sky portion in July.
