LEADING OFF
The Bears split its second series of the season after grabbing two wins against Sacramento State. They had previously taken two from Utah Valley back in March.
Shaydon Kubo had himself a weekend. The Hawaiian drove in nine runs, recorded two triples and bagged his first career grand slam (second home run). Combined with some rock-solid defense at first, Kubo has cemented himself as one of the best second basemen in the Western Athletic Conference.
Kubo's third triple of the season now ranks him first in the WAC and 31st in the country.
Freshman Garrett Fisher has been a pleasant surprise for the Blue and Gold this season. Tabbed as a backup to Josh Glenn, Fisher has proved his utility can be used all over the field. In the Bears' second win over the Hornets, Fisher went 2-5 with two doubles, five RBI and started his first game at first base, dialing up several stellar plays with the glove.
Fisher's .407 on-base percentage also ranks third on the team amongst regular-starters.
Including a massive three-run home run over the weekend, Josh Glenn added four more RBI to his total in 2021. At 1.06 RBI per game, Glenn leads the conference and sits third in total RBI, one behind Ethan Mann and Brandon Dieter of New Mexico State.
Dylan Bowers continues to mow down batters this season. Reaching double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season against Sacramento State, Bowers now has 66 on the season. His total is third-most in the WAC and his 12.91 strikeouts per nine innings leads the conference and is 31st best in the nation.
SCOUTING TARLETON STATE
In just his second season, first in Division I, at the helm of the Texan Baseball program, Aaron Meade has exceeded expectations. Originally tabbed to finish tied for last, Tarleton currently sits seventh with a 10-14 record in WAC play, just one game back in the win column from New Mexico State.
Junior London Green enters the weekend as the Texan's leader in batting average (.325) and stolen bases (10). His 10 stolen bases are second-most in the WAC this season.
On the mound, Alex Pinedo has recorded a team-best 58 strikeouts in 10 starts in 2021. TSU's closer AJ woods claims the second-most saves in the conference this year with nine and boasts a team-leading 2.11 ERA across 21.1 innings pitched.
A LOOK AHEAD.
Northern Colorado heads to Utah for a non-conference matchup against the Utes before finishing out its WAC season with two more road series.
