LEADING OFF
UNC jumped all over Grand Canyon in the first game of the series on Friday night. A heroic performance from Cooper Rust, who earned the first start of his Blue and Gold Career, set up the Bears' first win over GCU since March of 2018.
Logan Chase pitched a perfect ninth inning, grabbing his and UNC's first recorded save of the season.
Northern Colorado has found plenty of offense of success at the dish this season. The Bears rank second in the conference in home runs (27), slugging percentage (.419) and fourth in team batting average (.262).
Smash brothers Jake Gitter and Matt Burkart rank No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the WAC home run race. Gitter has smashed eight so far this season while Burkart has launched seven.
Gitter also leads the WAC in total bases (61) and slugging percentage (.649).
Western Athletic Conference RBI king Josh Glenn continues to set the pace. Glenn, who was named to the Buster Poser Collegiate Catcher of the Year Watch List, has racked up 30 RBI this season. His six sacrifice flies are still best in the conference and the nation entering Tuesday's midweek series against K-State.
Dylan Bowers has been an absolute powerhouse on the mound for the Bears this season. The big right-hander has mowed down 56 batters, second-best in the conference, and is first in strikeouts per nine innings at 12.29.
Sam Leach is one of only four pitchers in the WAC to boast two complete games this season.
Second baseman Shaydon Kubo went a team-best 4-10 over the weekend against the Lopes.
SCOUTING KANSAS STATE
Third-year head coach Pete Hughes and his squad have just dipped its toes in Big 12 play this season but already boasts two wins over then-No. 3 Texas Tech. The Wildcats also bested top-25 Oregon State back in February.
Sophomore Dylan Phillips leads the way with a .374 batting averaging and a team-high 35 RBI. Phillips, Zach Kokoska and Nick Goodwin all hold batting averages north of .300. While midweek games might not feature teams' aces, Jordan Wicks holds an impressive 4-2 record with 66 strikeouts in eight appearances this season.
A LOOK AHEAD.
Northern Colorado will be back home at Jackson Field on Friday, April 23 for more WAC action against Sacramento State.
