Bison force series split, Bears look ahead to WAC play

GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado couldn't quite stop the bleeding on Sunday. Giving up runs in four of the first five innings, the Bears were forced to settle for the series split.
Starting pitcher Joey Mazzetti worked himself into a bit of trouble in the first inning, hitting a batter and then giving up a home run. The right-hander managed to limit the damage to just two runs, though, keeping UNC within arm's reach.
The Bison stretched its advantage, though, scoring three in the second, two in the third and pushing across three more in the fourth for an even 10.
Northern Colorado refused to be blanked. In the fourth frame, Sam Leach led the inning off with a single and two batters later, Blake Tweedt brought him around to score.
As the Bears cycled through pitchers, Paul Falco had his most effective outing so far in 2021. The junior pitched two full innings, striking out four.
When North Dakota State pushed the eleventh run across home plate in the top of the seventh, UNC needed to answer to avoid a run-rule in the bottom half. Unable to do so, the Bison took Sunday's contest, leaving the series split.
