LEADING OFF
Northern Colorado is coming off a split with future Summit League foe North Dakota State.
Catcher Josh Glenn has been a welcomed sight to the Bears' roster this season. The Gateway Community College transfer has been a staple behind the plate and leads the conference in both batting average (.441) and RBI (16). Jake Gitter sits in third in the RBI race with 10. Behind the plate, Glenn has already gunned down four runners trying to steal bases this season. Additionally, his four sacrifice flies are the most in the country entering the weekend.
Speaking of Gitter, the junior from New Orleans sits atop the WAC in home runs so far this season with five. His 10 walks are also best in the conference and rank 10th in the nation.
Friday starter Dylan Bowers leads the conference in strikeouts (27). In three starts, the righty is 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA. In his second start against the Jackrabbits, Bowers recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
Head coach Carl Iwasaki remains just one win shy of 200 career victories at UNC. He would be the third coach in program history to achieve that mark.
Freshman Blake Tweedt has exceeded expectations in his first year in the Blue and Gold. Tweedt is 4-13 in the young season with a home run, triple, double, three walks and two RBI.
As a team, the Bears are hitting .287, best in the Western Athletic conference and 59th best in the Nation.
Friday begins the first of nine WAC series in 2021 for the Bears. UNC hasn't competed in conference play since 2019 when Northern Colorado went 8-19.
SCOUTING CAL BAPTIST
California Baptist was picked to finish fifth in the WAC this season. Head coach Gary Adcock returns for his 18th season at the helm of the Lancers having won nearly 600 ballgames in his career.
This season, CBU has already posted two wins against No. 33 Pepperdine, took one away from Saint Mary's College and swept UC Davis before hosting the Bears.
Chad Castillo leads the way offensively, hitting .325 with a home run and three doubles. Reliever CJ Culpepper has already posted three saves this season. He's pitched 6.1 innings, surrendering just two earned runs.
