Bears fall in first two games of the series at CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Following a rainout from Friday, Northern Colorado packed all the baseball it could into Saturday evening. Despite strong performances from Dylan Bowers and Sam Leach, the Bears fell just short in both matchups.
Bowers did a masterful job getting ahead in the count early and often to open Saturday.
In the third inning, he ran into a bit of trouble, loading the bases but neatly struck out his third batter of the day to leave the Lancers stranded.
Freshman Blake Tweedt has impressed everyone early throughout his debut campaign. Tweedt's double in the third inning brought around Quinn Ayers to give UNC the early 1-0 lead.
Back on the bump, Bowers had everything working. What little trouble he ran into, the righty was able to strand the CBU runners to maintain the Bears' advantage.
Bowers pitched 6.1 innings, struck out six, gave up just one run and stranded seven Lancers.
With Bowers dealing, Northern Colorado looked to provide its ace with a couple of insurance runs in the seventh. Matt Burkart made it three straight hits to lead off the inning, bringing home Josh Glenn. Billy Moreland added a second run with an RBI-double that allowed Ben McKay to trot home.
Disaster struck in the bottom end as Cal Baptist pushed seven runs across on four hits and two UNC errors.
Unable to muster a comeback, the Lancers took the first game of the series, 7-3.
California Baptist picked up where they left on to begin the second game of the evening. Scoring three runs on four hits and a UNC error, the Lancers took a quick lead.
Sam Leach did just about everything for the Bears on Saturday evening. Leach pitched seven full innings, giving up three earned runs and striking out eight. The Seattle native also added a hit to his totals.
CBU pushed a fourth run across via a wild pitch in the seventh.
Needing a little magic, Billy Moreland led the eighth frame off with a solo shot to get UNC on the board. Sensing a hint of momentum, the Bears loaded the bases with nobody out.
Enter the WAC's RBI leader Josh Glenn.
Last week, Glenn delivered a grand slam. This week, his two-RBI single brought the Bears within one, 4-3.
Despite leading off the bottom of the eighth with a triple, reliever Cooper Rust dialed up three big outs to strand the runner at third, giving UNC a chance for heroics in the ninth.
Once again, Northern Colorado's offense was unable to produce the game-tying run, handing CBU its second win of the day.
