Volleyball locks in No. 2 seed in Big Sky Tourney with win at Idaho
3/21/2021 9:48:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
MOSCOW, Idaho – With the second seed in the Big Sky Tournament on the line, Northern Colorado overcame a slow start to lock in the No. 2 spot with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-21 29-27) win over Idaho.
The Bears couldn't find any momentum in the first set. Defensively, UNC held Idaho to .162 hitting as Taylor Muff tallied six first-set kills but eight attack errors gave the opening frame to the Vandals.
Daisy Schultz and the Northern Colorado offense slowly worked themselves into the game in the second set. The Bears hit .268 and grabbed two big blocks to take the second set.
Sophomore Makenzie Harris relished the opportunity to get into the match. The Eaton, Colorado native collected four kills alone in the second set, establishing a big presence on the left side.
Idaho faced more of Harris, Taylor Muff, Lauren Hinrichs and a potent UNC offense in the third.
The Bears hit a match-best .393 in the set on its way to a commanding two-set lead. Midway through the fourth set, Muff, Harris and Hinrichs had all reached double figures.
No one matched the effort of Lauren Hinrichs, though. Hinrichs finished with a team-high 14 kills on just one error for a massive .591 hitting percentage.
Staples of a traditional Bears win began to pop up. As the Bears serve-receive game improve, so did the scoreboard.
Even in the match's final moments, UNC staved off several set points, closing out Idaho for its fifth win in a row.
