Bears stifle Bengals, earn second straight road win

POCATELLO, Idaho – Dangerous set pieces led the Bears to several high-quality scoring opportunities. Though UNC only found the back of the net once, it proved more than enough for its second win over Idaho State on Sunday.
Though it wasn't as quick of a start as Friday afternoon, Northern Colorado slowly but sure mounted the pressure against the Bengals.
With Lindsi Jennings and Erika Hall directing traffic in the Bears' defensive half, UNC was able to explore the outside channels where they had so much success in the first game against ISU.
Maddie Barkow, Olivia Seddon and Friday's goalscorer Kaitlyn Meeder each got shots away with Barkow and Meeder forcing saves from the ISU keeper.
Two days prior, the Northern Colorado defense held the Bengals without a shot in the first 45 minutes. Sunday afternoon, they almost equaled the effort, dialing up just a single shot which Morgan Bury watched carefully go wide.
Neither team could break the deadlock as the second half got underway. However, UNC looked the more dangerous side, especially on set pieces.
With a throw-in deep in the Bengal half in the 73rd minute, Maddie Barkow dialed-up one of her patented flip throws. Proving too much to handle, the perfectly-executed throw led directly to an own-goal to break the tie.
The Bears continued to ask questions of the Idaho State defense.
In total, Northern Colorado's forward play set up nine corners and seven shots on goal. Five different Bears lashed on target, two from Haley Collier and one each from Lexi Pulley, Maddie Barkow, Kaitlyn Meeder and Mackenzie Bray.
Even in the game's waning moments, UNC's counterattack not only creating numerous scoring opportunities but took valuable time off the clock.
Going another 45 minutes preventing Idaho State from shooting, the Bears managed to run out the time for the 1-0 shutout, second straight win and remains undefeated in Big Sky play.
Post-Match Thoughts
Head Coach, Tim Barrera
"Another total team effort today. We played very well from the back again as well, limiting them to just one shot. Credit to Idaho State, they made it hard for us all day long. Even when we scored, they didn't let up. It was a good day to get a number of players some much-needed minutes which will help us going forward. We'll get some good rest this weekend and look forward to matching up with Northern Arizona."
