LEADING OFF
The Bears love the long-ball. With 16 home runs so far in 2021, UNC leads the Western Athletic Conference and ranks No. 42 in the nation.
Northern Colorado is also no stranger to the sacrifice fly. The Bears' eight sac flies are the most in the WAC and 28th-best in the nation.
Individually, starting catcher Josh Glenn claims six of those sac flies. No one in the WAC or country has more.
Glenn is also the WAC's RBI leader. Already with 20 in the young season, Glenn is 14th-best in the nation in the category.
Designated hitter and Saturday starter Sam Leach has a 12-game hit streak going. His streak dates back to UNC's home opener against South Dakota State.
In the lead-off spot, Jake Gitter has done some real damage in 2021. The New Orleans native is tops in the conference in base on balls (13), home runs (5), runs (14) and slugging percentage (.740).
The Bears' ace Dylan Bowers has begun to find his rhythm. In his last outing against California Baptist, Bowers went 6.1 innings, gave up just one run and struck out six. The big righty leads the conference in strikeouts with 33 and his two doubles are the only extra-base hits he's given up this season.
Oral Roberts transfer Jacob Salim leads all starters with a 3.00 ERA.
Upon completion of the third game of the series against New Mexico State, UNC will have officially eclipsed the number of games it played in the COVID-19 -shortened 2020 season.
Head coach Carl Iwasaki remains one win away from 200 career victories at Northern Colorado. He would be the fourth coach in program history to reach that mark.
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO STATE
New Mexico State kicked off the conference season with three wins against Dixie State last weekend. All three wins came by a margin of 10-runs or more. The Aggies even managed to score 13 in its only loss of the series.
Junior outfielder Noah Haupt landed on the WAC All-Preseason team. Haupt is hitting .357 in the young season but has been outdone by Zerek Saenz, Cal Villareal and Tommy Tabak who all rank in the top-5 in hitting percentage in the WAC.
A LOOK AHEAD.
Northern Colorado returns home to Jackson Field for a matchup against Utah Valley.
