Hot start, late rally not enough for softball Friday

UNC softball fell to Utah State and Weber State
ST. GEORGE, Utah – A hot start and a late rally weren't enough for Northern Colorado softball on Friday as they started play in the Dixie State Tournament. The Bears fell to Utah State 4-3 in nine innings in the first game of the day and then 9-4 against Weber State.
UNC scored right away to start its day with a two-run first inning against the Aggies. Renya Caudillo made an impact in her first at-bat of the 2021 season with a two-out single that scored Mady Young. To make it 1-0. Northern Colorado went up 2-0 on an error by Utah State's second baseman.
Starter Erin Caviness was mowing down Utah State from the circle finishing with eight strikeouts on the day. She had a 1-2-3 first inning with all Ks. Her final line was eight innings pitched with eight strikeouts, four runs allowed, three earned and five hits.
Lauren Strathearn tripled with two outs in the top of the fifth and came home on Alyssa Wenzel's infield single.
Utah State tied the game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to force extras.
The game stayed knotted at three until a walk-off sacrifice fly gave USU the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Fresh off the walk-off loss, UNC needed a moment to regroup before battling with Weber State. The Wildcats didn't give the Bears much time to breathe, jumping out to a 5-1 through two and 9-1 through four.
The Bears battled back with three runs over the final three innings.
Natalie Joyner had a productive out to score a run in the fifth, followed by a Katie Simongaard infield single in the sixth and Dani Young bomb in the seventh.

It was missed opportunities for Northern Colorado on Friday, The Bears stranded 20 runners over the two games.
Game Notes
- The eight strikeouts for Erni Caviness were a season-high for the Bears.
- Reyna Caudillo had a strong first appearance in the 2021 season. She went 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk.
