CHENEY, Wash. – Northern Colorado has its sights set on a Big Sky Regular-Season Championship. Head coach Lyndsey Oates' crew completed the first piece of that puzzle, sweeping Eastern Washington, 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-13).
The first set was quite the back and forth affair. In fact, UNC and EWU traded leads five times and the score was tied at 10 different points throughout the opening frame.
Makenzie Harris showed the Eagle fans what was about to come all night long. The junior from Eaton, Colorado connected for five kills on seven attempts.
With the score tied at 18, a timely ace from Kailey Jo Ince, followed by an Eastern Washington error gave UNC the cushion it needed as Harris and Lauren Strain finished off the first set win.
The Eagles weren't about to go away just yet, though. The second stanza featured an astounding seven lead changes and another 10 ties. EWU hit .520 and committed just a single.
Leave it to Northern Colorado's dynamic servers to take over a match. Five aces in the second set alone helped the Bears overcome solid hitting from Eastern Washington. Laura Katarzynski and Syd Cole each recorded a pair.
Harris added another five kills as counterpart Rachel Hickman found her groove, piling up six kills on .455.
By the end of the evening, Harris and Hickman would each hit over .500. Hickman finished with 12 kills (.524) while Harris went for a career-high 16 kills (.565).
Leading two sets to none, Syd Cole and offense saved its best offensive performance for the third and final sed.
Harris led the way with six kills but Hickman (4) and Strain (4) were close behind.
UNC hit .536 to secure the three-set sweep and claim its best hitting percentage of the season at .395.
