Strong blocking not enough to overcome Hornets
10/21/2021 10:01:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Northern Colorado dialed up its best blocking performance in Big Sky play this fall but it wasn't enough to hold off the Hornet as the Bears dropped the match, 0-3 (23-25, 21-25, 22-25).
An early ace from Daisy Schultz and a pair of blocks originally gave UNC the early lead. However, a couple of quick runs from the Hornets forced the Bears to take a timeout trailing by four.
Lyndsey Oates crew wasn't about to go away just yet. Rattling off six straight points to retake the lead, UNC found a bit of momentum midway through the first set.
Northern Colorado couldn't sustain the comeback effort, however, as Sacramento State hit .333 in the opening frame to take the lead.
Quietly in the second set, UNC began to piece together one of its best blocking performances of the season. Led by Lauren Strain, who assembled seven total blocks on the evening to match her career-high, the Bears fought tooth and nail to keep themselves in the set.
A Cece Huhn kill late in the second gave the Bears a brief 21-20 lead but Sacramento State ripped off five straight points to take the two-set lead.
In the third, Northern Colorado continued strong effort in the front row. Ince led all Bears with nine kills while Strain added eight hitting a team-high .250 out of the middle. Makenzie Harris wasn't far behind with seven kills of her own.
As a team, UNC mustered 11 blocks, its best effort since totaling 14 against Bradley in mid-September.
For every question the Bears had, the Hornets seemed to have the answers on Thursday evening.
Despite the contest only lasting three sets, the duel featured 15 lead changes and 36 ties.
It just wasn't meant to be for coach Oates and the Bears, though, as Sacramento State went on another late run in the third set to grab the victory.
