PORTLAND, Ore. – Though Rachel Hickman and Kailey Jo Ince each tallied a match-high 14 kills, Portland State capitalized on a number of UNC errors as the Bears fell, 1-3 (16-25, 23-25, 27-25, 17-25).
The Vikings grabbed all the momentum in the opening set with a long run. Following a Daisy Schultz ace, PSU rattled off 12 straight points, forcing Northern Colorado to play from a deep hole.
Rachel Hickman racked up four kills in set No. 1 but it wasn't enough as the hosts grabbed the early lead.
UNC found a bit of rhythm in the second set. The Bears improved its hitting to .273 as Hickman and Kailey Jo Ince became the No.1 and No. 2 options for the offense.
The two each finished with 14 kills apiece to lead all hitters.
Northern Colorado thought it had tied the game at 24 but a challenge from Portland State proved successful for the Vikings and abruptly ended the second set at 25-23.
Determined to extend the match, the Bears came out swinging in the third. UNC started the set with a 6-1 run that included one of two aces for Kyndall Feather on the evening.
Hitting .311, the Bears needed extra points to finish off PSU. Annette Bake finally dealt the decisive blow that sent the match into the fourth set.
Timely Viking runs, combined with a number of Northern Colorado errors was too much to handle in set No. 4. Though the Bears held off four match points, Portland State eventually held out, earning the four-set victory.
